Marriage Minute: Communication

A lot of couples think communication means they never fight. That’s not it. Communication means you can say the hard thing and still trust each other on the other side of it.

Before you get married, practice this: bring up one small disagreement on purpose, and see how you both handle it — not to win, just to see how you repair. It doesn’t have to be a big one. Here are a few you can actually try:

  1. A chore that always seems to land on you — who does it, and why does it keep landing there?
  2. How do you spend a Saturday when one of you wants to go out and the other wants to stay in?
  3. A money call — a purchase one of you thinks is worth it and the other doesn’t.
  4. How much time do you want to spend with each other’s family over the holidays?
  5. A small habit — being late, leaving the dishes, phones at dinner — that quietly gets under your skin.

That tells you more about your marriage than any conversation about the wedding day ever will.
